John the Baptist prophesies:
"I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit.”
Mark
1:8
"...the Holy Spirit
descended in bodily form like a dove upon
Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My
beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” Luke 3:22
"Then Jesus, being
filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from
the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in
those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended,
He was hungry."
Luke 4:1
"Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit
and said, 'I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that
You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and
revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good
in Your sight." Luke 10:21
Jesus
tells His disciples about the Holy Spirit
"Jesus answered,
'Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of
water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of
God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I
said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where
it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell
where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is
born of the Spirit.'”
John 3:5-8
"'It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh [human
nature] profits nothing.'"
John 6:63
'''...the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot
receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you
know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you."
John
14:17
"...the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father
will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and
bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the
world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be
troubled, neither let it be afraid."
John 14:26-27
"...when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the
Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He
will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness."
John
15:26-27
"...when they arrest you and deliver you up,
do not worry
beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever
is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who
speak, but the Holy Spirit. Now brother will betray
brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise
up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But
he
who endures to the end shall be saved."
Mark 13:11-13
“Now when they bring you to the synagogues and
magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you
should answer, or what you should say. For the Holy Spirit
will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
Luke 12:11-12
“These things I have spoken to you while being present with
you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father
will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and
bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."
John 14:25-26
"Jesus came
and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given
to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and
lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
Note: Believers out of
"all nations" or areas will indeed be baptized. But, in spite of some
contemporary claims, nations themselves can neither
"believe" nor be "baptized"!
"...He commanded
them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise
of the Father, 'which,' He said, 'you have heard from Me;
for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be
baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.' Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying,
'Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?'
"And He said to them, 'It is not for you to know times or
seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But
you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon
you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts
1:4-8
Pentecost --
the gift of the Holy Spirit
"When the Day of
Pentecost had fully come, they [disciples and other believers]
were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a
sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled
the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to
them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance....
"Then they ["the multitudes"] were all amazed and
marveled, saying to one another, 'Look, are not all these who
speak 'Galileans? 'And how is it that we hear, each in our own
'language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes... visitors
from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we
hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of
God.'”
Acts
2:1-13
"Peter said to them,
'Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of
sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all
who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.'”
Acts 2:38-39
"He [Stephen] being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son
of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
Acts 7:54-56
Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and
Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the
comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied."
Acts
9:31
"And the disciples were
filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit."
Acts
13:52
Discernment through the Spirit
"...as it is
written: 'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered
into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for
those who love Him.'
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.
For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep
things of God. For what man knows the things of a man
except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one
knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we
have received, not the spirit of the world, but the
Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things
that have been freely given to us by God. These things we
also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but
which the Holy Spirit teaches...."
1 Corinthian 2:9-13
"Jesus answered and said, 'I thank You, Father, Lord of
heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from
the wise and prudent and have revealed them to
babes."
Matthew 11:25
Prayer and
Worship in the Spirit
"...the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers
will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the
Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit,
and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:23-24
"For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the
Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence
in the flesh...."
Philippians 3:3-4
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all
prayer and supplication in the Spirit...."
Ephesians 6:17-18
Fruit of the Spirit
"Walk in the
Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh
[human nature]. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are
contrary to one another, so that you do not do the
things that you wish.' Now the works of the flesh are
evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions,
jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions,
dissensions, heresies, envy.... those who practice such
things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control. Against such there is no law. And those
who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions
and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also
walk in the Spirit."
Galatians 5:16-25
Living and
growing by the Spirit
"...you are not
in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God
dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of
Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the body is
dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of
righteousness. But if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the
dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His
Spirit who dwells in you."
Romans 8:9-11
"I am the true
vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me
that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch
that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You
are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to
you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot
bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither
can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the
branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much
fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."
John
15:1-5
"...Christ also
suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He
might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh
but made alive by the Spirit..."
1 Peter 3:18
"...if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of
love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any
affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded,
having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind."
Philippians 2:1-2
Driven by the
flesh rather than walking by the Spirit
"Having begun
in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the
flesh? Have you suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it
was in vain?"
Galatians 3:3-4
"For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the
will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts,
drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable
idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that
you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation,
speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who
is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this reason
the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that
they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but
live according to God in the spirit."
1
Peter 4:3-6
"And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you
were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the
Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God."
1
Corinthians 6:11
Led by the Holy Spirit
"So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to
Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus."
Acts
13:49
"Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were
forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the
word in Asia."
Acts 16:6
“Paul purposed in the Spirit,
when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to
Jerusalem, saying, 'After I have been there, I must also see
Rome.'”
Acts 19:21
Paul wrote:
"I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the
things that will happen to me there, except that the
Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and
tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor
do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my
race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the
Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."
Acts
20:22-24
"I was in the
Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud
voice, as of a trumpet, saying, ' am the Alpha and the
Omega, the First and the Last.'”
Revelation 1:10-11
Old Testament
prophecy of the coming work of the Spirit
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has
anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to
the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of
vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in
Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
Isaiah 61:1-3
