ON THE STATE OF MISSIOLOGY IN 1968
Missiology stands at the cutting edge of the expansion and extension of the Christian faith. It assists the church in building the kingdom of God to the glory of our Triune Lord. The missiological task entails reviewing the church’s missional involvement, altering her course of action whenever and wherever necessary, and gaining objective perspectives on all her activities....
...the missiological terrain embraces disciplines in theology in social {65} sciences: anthropology (ethnology, cultural dynamics, linguistics, crosscultural and intercultural communiction), sociology, psychology, human geography, political science, urbanology, and economics.
The decade of the sixties was a watershed for worldwide mission. In no other single year during the sixties were so many meetings held, programs launched, changes made, and decisions reached that have impacted the state of missiology for the next 25 years as profoundly as those of 1968.

Fourth, mainline churches in all parts of the world became strong advocates to exchange transcultural evangelism for religious dialog with people of other faiths. The rationale was to demonstrate cultural sensitivity, theological inclusiveness, and religious tolerance. According to the late David Bosch, this new ecumenical theology was to achieve "nothing short of the liquidation of the Church" on the one hand, and the domestication of God 's Kingdom on earth on the other.
In terms of ecumenical theology this means that "the inhabited world is synonymous with the Kingdom of God." (Bosch 1980:216; cf. 1976:61-64; 1991:382-85; Beyerhaus 1992:41-64).

Preface They are sharp. They have a certain charisma, a certain persuasiveness. They have done their homework. And anyone engaged in mission work in the 1980's will sooner or later deal with their ideas. Their movement has been called the most important mission development of the century. Some call it a fad. I doubt that it is. It is an attempt to get a handle on basic missiological questions. It is the first really unified attempt to wrestle with questions individual churches have been wrestling with on their own. Whether under its present name, or another, it will be around for a long time.
The Church Growth movement, and its founder Donald McGavran, need to be understood and understood well. They are knocking on the door of any church that takes mission work seriously. They claim to have much to of offer any church that will I take the time to listen. Should we take them up on their offer? It is my hope that this paper will I give you some insights into the Church Growth movement and that it might help us make what I believe to be an inevitable decision.

This then is what I mean by spontaneous expansion. I mean the expansion which follows the unexhorted and unorganized activity of individual members of the Church explaining to others the Gospel which they have found for themselves; I mean the expansion which follows the irresistible attraction of the Christian Church for men who see its ordered life, and are drawn to it by desire to discover the secret of a life which they instinctively desire to share; I mean also the expansion of the Church by the addition of new Churches.
I know not how it may appear to others, but to me this unexhorted, unorganized, spontaneous expansion has a charm far beyond that of our modern highly organized missions. ...
I suspect, however, that I am not alone in this strange preference, and that many others read their Bibles and find there with relief a welcome escape from our material appeals for funds, and from our methods of moving heaven and earth to make a proselyte.
