American Minute
On June 8, 1845, "Old Hickory" died. Wounded by a sword during the Revolutionary War, he later fought the Seminole Indians and, in the War of 1812, defeated the British in New Orleans.... His name was Andrew Jackson. His wife Rachel dying just three months before he took office as the 7th U.S. President, Andrew Jackson stated in his 2nd Inaugural:
On December 30, 1836, Andrew Jackson wrote to A.J. Donelson, upon the death of his wife, Emily: "We cannot recall her, we are commanded by our dear Saviour, not to mourn for the dead, but for the living... She has changed a world of woe for a world of eternal happiness, and we ought to prepare as we too must follow... 'The Lord's will be done on earth as it is in heaven.'" Of the Bible, Andrew Jackson stated: "That book, Sir, is the Rock upon which our republic rests." He was also the only American President to pay off the National debt.
George Washington was born this day, February 22, 1732.... After the Declaration of Independence was read to his troops, General Washington ordered chaplains appointed to each regiment, concluding: 'The General hopes and trusts, that every officer and man, will endeavour so to live, and act, as becomes a Christian Soldier, defending the dearest Rights and Liberties of his country.'"
