As a young heathen raised on the superhero comics and cartoons of the 90's, I have to admit I found it rather thrilling despite myself...I only bring it up because it really seems like anti-Christian sentiment in movies is becoming increasingly blatant.
One of the most common tactics seems to be to associate the villain with some warped view of Christianity. The villain, Loki (a human-looking alien based on Norse mythology) goes on and on about how humans were meant to submit and that 'freedom' is the bane of humanity and the source of our suffering. He also keeps insisting people bow to him.
We know of course that one day all will bow to Jesus and that true freedom is found in submission to God. The unsaid assumption of the film is that man's 'freedom' is his freedom from God's rule, and that humans should bow to no one. Loki goes so far as to mind control certain characters causing one of his victims to exclaim euphorically 'it's not just knowledge...it's TRUTH!' (a creepy caricature of Christians).
Later, a character who escaped Loki's hypnotism describes what it's like in words that closely resemble reports I've read of what demonic possession feels like. Loki himself has 'visions' where he bargains with a demonic 'alien', from whom he learned 'ancient secrets'. It all weaves together so cleverly, until the values of good to a Christian appears evil.
Even more subtle is the character 'Captain America', obviously written to cater to the 'Christian Conservative' crowd. He acknowledges God and seems to portray all those old-fashioned virtues that play well with that demographic, but over the course of the film, his role and decisions end up getting portrayed as inferior to the TRUE hero of the film, the arrogant, licentious Tony Stark/Iron Man.
Oh...also, aliens end up attacking the world in an attempt to destroy it. Who else in people's consciousness have tried to destroy the world and vowed to it again, I wonder?

Response by R.L.: I'm sorry, but anyone who would delve into the intricate details of a movie, obviously does not one humours bone in their body.
Why is it that films, songs and books have to be continuously torn apart by religious fanatics who cannot simply watch a movie without claiming they are being fed 'bad thoughts'.
The Avengers is a Superhero movie and nothing else, nothing more. It was made for fun and excitement, not to 'brainwash' and mock Christianity.
Just let it be. Leave films alone. Don't do to films what you Christians did to Harry Potter. Its absurd. Its reasons like this why religion in the younger generation is dwindling.

Haven't we all been waiting long enough for this 'arrival of the Holy One'? Many others and myself included are getting quite bored. I want to see God! I want to touch his beard.
