I wanted to write a quick comment on a post I
found from your website [See Q&A: Hip
Hop]
It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach when I see these types of
opinions masquerading as Biblical Fact. I recently choreographed a
"hip-hop" routine for my church's youth hip-hop team, and it was done to
"Breath In, Breath Out" by Lecrae (lyrics). While
teaching this dance, we disected the song which is centered around reading
the Word. It talks about a boy who was on fire for God but never opened his
Bible and never had any knowledge to back up his passion. Not only did the
kids realize that this is yet another tool that can be used for God's glory,
but they also learned to keep a keen ear out for lyrics when they are
listening to Holy Hip Hop (the correct name for that genre of music).
To say that hip hop dance is pagan in all forms is ridiculously
narrow-minded. Now I will be the first to tell you that satan has taken
ahold of it in many forms as he tries to do with all earthly things but that
does not mean that we cannot claim it once again for the body of Christ!
I would love to see a response as this is one of my greatest passions in
life. Also, please, feel free to watch the performance I spoke of in
this link. (It is a
link to the YouTube
site where it has been posted). I would love your opinion on what part
of this performance is "pagan" in nature.

In his response, "Concerned"
(below) mentioned a few "Christian" metal acts, one of which was Lamb Of
God/Burn The Priest. He said, quote "There are plenty of christian bands
that are heavy. Lamb of god, P.O.D., Even the members of Shadows Fall thank
God in their little booklet.". Now, correct me if I am wrong, but, since
when does Christ-centered music use the phrase "I don't give a $@#!",
referring to the four letter "F" word so prevalent in the world?
I paid a visit to this supposed "Christian" band's website, and watched the
music video for a song titled "Laid To Rest". here is a part of the chorus
of the song, with the offensive "F" word removed:
Smother another failure, lay this to rest. Console yourself, you're
better alone.
Destroy yourself, see who gives a (expletive deleted)
Absorb yourself, you're better alone
Destroy yourself, see who gives a (expletive
deleted). Failure.
I'd heard of this band about 2 years ago. Just looking at the cover art for
most of their albums led me to think "Christian band? Yeah, rrrright".
Of course, unless one reads the lyrics, it's VERY difficult to understand
what is being sung (or sang??). Shadows Fall, another "christian"
band (hmmm), on their website, they have a Flash video, titled webisode
5..the first image that appears is a Pentagram. One scene in the video
features someone (a band member?) huffing from a marijuana water bong, as
well as other numerous "features", one of which is beer/alcohol.
One might wonder where this 14 year old's parents are in raising him to be a
Godly young man. As far as P.O.D. is concerned, I can't say, as I eschew
even LISTENING to contemporary "christian" music of any kind. Fact is,
according to what is presented, neither Lamb Of God/Burn The Priest
nor Shadows Fall should even be ALLUDED to being Christian, as the
fruit of their spirits plainly show otherwise. I pray for this young boy who
obviously hasn't been taught to differentiate between what is Godly and what
is of the world. Sure, he's at an age where he's accountable for his
actions, but, he'd have been better equipped if his parents had at all cared
for their son's well-being and spiritual direction.
A personal bit of advice to this young man: It doesn't matter how many times
someone says "thank you God" or "Thank you, Jesus". If their actions don't
show it, and what they do does not align with what God wants, they are no
more of a Christian than the devil himself. We all make mistakes, but, the
fact is, when we follow in others footsteps, you'd better make sure the
person you're following is a real man or woman of Jesus, or else you will be
ensnared by a lie. What you put in your mind is what will come out of your
mouth, and, if it's the garbage that calls itself "christian" music (but is
in reality just a cheap, blasphemous copy), you will set yourself up for a
fall.
Seek what GOD wants from you, listen to those who SHOW and LIVE God's Word,
according to what GOD wants, and you'll be on the narrow path that God WANTS
you to follow. Shadows Fall and Lamb Of God are NOT Christian bands,
regardless of the "god" they thank in their little "booklets". A real man or
woman of God does NOT curse or swear. The best advice I can give to you is
this: If it LOOKS, ACTS, SOUNDS, and BEHAVES like the world, it IS of the
world, and God has EXPRESSLY called us to NOT BE LIKE THE WORLD. We have to
live IN the world (meaning on planet Earth), but, Jesus proclaims we are not
to stoop to it's level in order to live IN the world, nor are we, as
Christians, to stoop to the world's level in order to witness to them about
our Perfect Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, which is what a major "chunk" of
CCM is doing
Young man, you and I BOTH know it's wrong to listen to secular music of the
world, and for someone who proclaims themselves to be Christian, it is wrong
of them, according to God, for them to emulate/look/act/think/ behave even
REMOTELY like the world. Hence, when "christian" musicians (of the CCM
"crowd") go around and proclaim to love Jesus...when they SOUND LIKE Marilyn
Manson, Def Leppard, et al., they are basically, in spirit, slapping Jesus
in the face.
It's hard to resist temptation when there's no one around who gives a rip
about you, but, you just have to LOOK HARDER for someone to guide you and
your eyes and soul should be kneeling before Jesus Christ for your direction
in EVERYTHING in your life. You aren't a loser or worthless, especially when
it comes to how much Jesus loves you, young man. Seek someone who is a true
man or woman of God to help you see the VERY subtle difference nowadays
between the Godly and the ungodly. I wasted a good part of the life God has
given me falling into one trap after another, because I thought I was above
all Godly instruction. God is molding me, He was gracious enough to me to
give me another chance. He had to get my attention the HARD way, but, He's
got my attention. It was MY hardened heart that kept me away from Jesus, not
the other way around: Jesus wasn't lost, I WAS.
Young man, DON'T let what happened to me happen to you, too. It's NOT worth
it, and you can be sure of going through some discipline unlike any you've
ever contemplated. Stop listening to those atrocious "christian" bands and
get your life on track with the REAL Jesus Christ.
Mr. & Mrs. Kjos aren't trying to harm you. They are in a BETTER position to
warn you about the dangers of supposedly "christian" music than I am.
I'm being remolded by Christ, and there's a LOT of molding Jesus will be
doing with me til the day I die.

I've been reading the comments from readers in the
Music section. It seems that many of them have rebuked you for your rebuke
of various artists and styles of music from a Scriptural standpoint. I agree
with what you have presented in "Popular Music with Pagan Roots." Permit me
to join you in rebuking the music genres of rap and heavy metal in
particular--but from the perspective of secular professionalism in music.
The use of electronic devices in musical
composition has allowed for dishonesty in the making of that "music." (I use
the word "music" here in a very loose way.) In a studio with multi-track
capabilities, musicians and technicians combine their talents to produce
songs that are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to perform in a
"live" setting. Drum machines can electronically produce a back up track for
rappers with virtually no real musical talent whatsoever. There was a duet
called "Millie Vinillie" who performed songs that they never really sang or
played. They merely lip synced the music.
Music can be "bad" from more than just a
Scriptural point of view. In the rock genre, for example, compare the
precise vocal harmonies and intricate musicianship of the "Eagles" band with
the screaming vocals and thrashing rhythms of the "Motley Crewe" band. It
takes months, and even years, of practice to be able to play clear chords on
an acoustic guitar, and then further, be able to put those chords together
with fluidity. But why bother with that much work, when you can learn a
couple of chords on an electric guitar, and be a hit with your friends by
simply thrashing a strum once every so often, and let the electronic sustain
and distort system carry the sound (noise), while you scream into a
microphone which feeds into an electronic gadget that create echoes and/or
harmonies of your voice, with a little feedback thrown in for good measure.
If I strum a "G" over and over on the guitar for
15 minutes, all the while singing "Praise Jesus," even varying the rhythm
and phrasing; then what have I accomplished in the way of glorifying God
with my musicianship? Not Much, should be the answer. Easy musicianship and
easy believism seem to compliment each other: both are very shallow. Both
are very prevalent in Christianity today. I could work myself into a
spiritual frenzy with my guitar playing and probably get anyone listening
worked up as well, but it was ME and my Adam nature generating those
emotions.
The Holy Spirit doesn't cause us to act that way:
that is another demonic spirit lying to you through me. All the beautiful
music and arm waving directed at the Lord, without true Holy Spirit
conviction, will not bring us any closer to the Lord, or Him any closer to
us. What starts out as an honest desire to worship the Lord can turn into a
demand that the Holy Spirit be present in our gathering.

the metallica album "Kill 'em all" is not about telling kids to kill people.
no actually it was called that as a form a against the record company who
was inhibiting their (metallica's) creativity. oh and by the by the song
"master of puppets" is not about metallica controlling and twisting the
minds of young children, it is acutally about drug addiction and its
destructive powers. "chop your breakfast on a mirror" and "i'm your source
of self-destruction" are clear indicaters of this and... thats it...heh

Mr. Spooky, though the words
and phrases are known to some to have new or hidden messages, they still
communicate another message through the common usage of the same words.
In other words, many kids who hear the words "kill 'em all" will take
that phrase at face value. If they play the music again and again, that
phrase will be rooted and replayed in their minds long after they stop
playing it.
In other words, my concern
is not so much what secret meaning a message has to its author -- but
how does it affect the minds, beliefs and values of those who hear it.

I very much agree with you about modern music
worship.
Often it gets people pumped up without true reverence for Jesus
but rather a internal sense of 'temporary feeling' . Many forms of music can
do that . I can switch music on the radio based on what 'mood' I am in .
.... I like to have worship music that puts me in reflection only on the

I am a fourteen year old boy, and have
recently come across your website from a friend of mine. Now, I am a church
going christian, and I listen to Heavy metal music and 80's metal "DEF
leppard" "Ozzy ozbourne'' "Iron Maiden" and "AC/DC" among many others.
I personally beleive in free
speech, so I'm not going to say "Stop saying those mean things!" but I am
going to say that I don't agree. There are plenty of christian bands that
are heavy. Lamb of god, P.O.D., Even the members of Shadows Fall thank God
in their little booklet. I just think that it is horrible to steryotype
music like that. Music is music, and if one band is bad it doesn't mean that
they all are. I'm terribly sorry if I've taken time from you so you can read
this letter, and I don't expect a response, but I'd like one.
There are many kinds of "christians"
these days, and statistics show that the most of them are just as caught
up in the the world's values and immoral behavior as those who don't
claim to the name of Christ. So the fact that you are "a church
going christian" and listen to heavy metal music doesn't prove that
AC/DC and Iron Maiden are good by any godly standard.
Of course, one bad band
doesn't make all bands bad. But some bands -- including most of the ones
you love -- are darkly occult. And all the bands you mention offer
lyrics that mock God and glorify occult philosophies.
One characteristic of true
Christians -- those who have been "born of the Spirit" and changed from
the inside out by the life of Jesus Christ -- is that they love what God
loves and hate what He hates. Please read and pray that God show you His
heart as you read the Scriptures.:

I don't agree with the author of the article that ALL rock music is evil, but
I think many forms of popular music, like death metal and gangsta rap, are
indeed satanic. There's no difference between the source of the lyrics of
these death metal bands and the lyrics of gangsta rappers like Eminem.
I had to get rid of my second favorite band's
Vapor Trails album recently because of the tarot card imagery in the album art
and in one of the songs. I feared that the album may have been "channeled"
because the lyricist got involved with a psychic before the band recorded this
album, and truth told the imagery had frightened me when I first got the album
last year. I tried to rationalize keeping the album but I really didn't feel
safe having it around so I threw it out a few weeks ago.
I thank God for helping you
make that choice.

Recently I learned that lyrics from one of
Eminem’s songs included a story about his killing his wife by cutting her
throat (apparently the sound of her blood gurgeling can also be heard).
As a part of this song, Eminem talks to his child about helping him toss the
wife/mother into the river after they kill her. In another song he states that
he will go back to Columbine and finish the job.
I also learned that the Columbine killings were
a lot more specifically linked to killing Christians at the school as a stated
goal of the two killers than the media has allowed the public to know. If
society wasn’t falling so incredibly far down in a amoral state, then one
would assume Eminem would be tarred and feathered by everyone, yet conversely
he is very popular to everyone.
Recently, a young minister I know fairly well
(I’ll keep anonymous of course), was reported to me to be an Eminem fan.
Personally, I would think Satan might blush at the thought of liking this guy,
how anyone else could, is simply beyond me. What does one now have to say to
become offensive? I have to assume there is no way to be seen as offensive.
But wait, maybe if one dared to declare the
Bible true, or Jesus the Son of God, oh yes... to many now that might be
offensive. How sad is that? Good is bad, Bad is good.
It's tragic, Jeff. But God told
us it would happen in
Isaiah 5:20

I used to be such a huge fanatic of
secular rap music. It started back in middle school, years before Christ came
into my life. At the time I just wanted to be "cool" and fit in with the crowd
(who mostly loved rap music). I just liked it, and the music was new to me. I
was literally seduced by it. The beats, the lyrics, the ideals, everything.
Then Christ came into my life between 9th and 10th grade. And I felt disgusted
inside myself by all the trash I listened to. I hesitated to put it all away,
though. But immediately after I received Christ I KNEW I had to put the music
I was listening to behind me.
I look at all the people around me and I wonder why they would put up with
music that tells people to have premarital sex, get drunk, high, smoke
marijuana, murder people, insult authority (cops, parents, the government),
and even twist God's Word (such as some of the "Bone Thugs & Harmony" songs).
To me the music is totally disgusting; I want nothing to do with it.
But thanks be to God, who has rescued us and has given us music in our hearts
to sing praises to Him, and to His Son, who has rescued us by His resurrection
power!

don't remember which one) and you mentioned someting about rap and how it
encourages bad morals. As I am writing this I am listening to a live concert
of Jay-Z's H to the Izzo, V to the Izzay on my CD player. It has questionable
morals in it, but I don't think that I will become like him.
But you may learn to think
like him. Since his immoral, violent and hateful lyrics don't bother you, I
would guess that he has already desensitized you. I suggest you consider this
important warning:

because of his music. Teens like him because he just appeals to them.
Right. That's why his
message is so seductive.
Since I'm a teen, I know what it's like. You
might argue that he's a personicication of the devil. Personally, I think that
if he is, then he's one ____ good rapper. Does he really do everything in his
songs? NO! he does it because he knows that it sells.
And you admire his
values -- his self-centered compromise?
I hope that you can just exclude rap from your
right-wing christian views. It doesn't deserve any more bad rap (pun intended)
then it already has.

I read your article on popular music, and I have a few
things to say. First of all, I am a fourteen year old Christian, and I listen to rock
music, and I'm offended that u call all of it bad. You have picked out the worst rock
bands and called it a representation of all Modern hard, punk, and Alternative rock.
Thats not true.
Also, you seem to blame problems on rock music. I blame the music on the unhappiness.
Watch teenagers. Do you see teens from picture perfect families wearing a shirt that
says Slipknot? Not very often. Also, the effect this type of music has on me is
basically... good. When my parents have been yelling at me, and I have been yelling at
them, and I feel like screaming something I shouldn't at them, I can go up to my room,
and listen to someone else screaming. It dosen't help for me to sit there and pray.
No, I can understand that. Your
experience also illustrates why an alcoholic feels better when he takes a drink (at
least for a moment), a food addict feels satisfied while eating a huge dish of ice
cream, or why a sex addict has moments of peace after he assaults someone. People
tend to find fast ways to gratify their wants and appease our restlessness -- whether or
not the "solutions" are healthy or lasting.
A far better way to deal with
frustration and pain is to come to Jesus Christ, repent (turn our lives around and give
ourselves over to Him) and trust His promises of healing and saving grace. When you
decide to follow Him, He will answer your prayers and enable you to win all kinds of
inner battles. See

I was reading a section of your website concerning symbols
and I noticed that you attached the more offensive ones to hard rock bands. I am a
practicing christian. I am baptised, saved, asked Jesus to come into my heart, whatever
you want to call it, but I am also a huge modern rock fan.
All I ask is that you don't generalize hard rock with Satan. I am not a Satanist, and
neither are most of my peers. In fact, most of the more popular rock artists don't
promote Satan... directly anyway.
If you assume that most bands are like Marilyn Manson (who
I don't care for at all), then you are horribly mistaken. Usually the only people who
enjoy people such as Manson and Slipknot have other issues that contribute to their
listening choices (such as troubled family and just trying to look tough). I am deeply
offended by what you have said about my music. I know that many bands decide to do drugs
and use offensive language, and that reflects on young people, but that is also the
person's choice whether they want to listen to it. I don't do drugs or anything. I just
enjoy hard rock music.
I am sorry if this offends you in any way, but I guarrantee it won't as much as your
ignorance has offended me.
You don't offend me at all, Evan. We
simply disagree. I won't restate all my reasons for believing that rock music
doesn't belong in the church, since I listed them in

have read your articles regarding the influence of pagan music and also
the controversy surrounding CCM. It may surprise you that only 4 years ago, before
Christ quite literally came and rescued me, I was still listening, at age 51, to rock
groups like Led Zeppelin, AC-DC, Aerosmith,
and others.
I also distinctly remember the effect this music had on me.
While traveling to and from work (1 hour or more each way), I would play music from one
of these groups in my car at a volume that nearly shattered the windows. The music was
captivating and mesmerizing. I was also a "road rage" driver, a madman behind the wheel,
and only by the Grace of God am I not dead or in jail. Even on that day when Jesus came
and got me, the thoughts that were going through my head were terrible.
Swear words were flying through my head even while I was in
the pastor's office asking Jesus to save me. It was awful, and it has taken a long time
for me to understand what really happened, to even believe that Jesus really did save
me, and to know that those thoughts were not mine. Satan is particularly angry that he
no longer has me, especially, I think, from the background of my family on my father's
side, and how so terribly evil my grandfather was.
Today it is most clear to me that because of His wondrous
Grace and love for me, Jesus is mine! I cannot express in words the difference this
makes. Today I spend my commuting time either in prayer, listening to the Bible on CD,
other Bible teaching tapes, Christian radio, or hymns on CD. The effect of all of this
is so very much different.
Lately I have even begun to be able (again only by His
Grace) to really feel love for others, in the manner that a Christian should feel love
for those that are lost, and so desperately need Jesus. There is no way any of this
could be without Him. I pray every day that He will help me to love Him more, and that
He will love others through me. Once again I must say that your material had helped so
very much, and again I thank God for you and I thank you. The truth always rings so
clearly from your writings.
Thank you, dear Dennis. It's wonderful
when God touches our hearts with His love and brings His people together across the
miles and oceans, isn't it? Your testimony and sweet spirit reminds me of the woman in
Luke 7:47 who washed Jesus' feet with her hair and tears. Because she recognized so
deeply her own need for mercy and redemption, He said to her -- and to all of us, "But
to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”
Blessed are the meek
and the poor in spirit -- the humble ones who see their need and receive of His grace.
You walk among them, and He certainly loves you very very much.

I wanted to tell you about my own experience with "Christian Rock" music. I have never
really listened to what is called Christian rock, but when I got saved, I listened for a
long time to what is called contemporary Christian music (e.g., Twila Paris). I cannot
really say that the contemporary Christian music is necessarily bad. However, one day I
ordered 3 CD's from Hope For the Heart Ministry in which June Hunt sings (very nicely I
might add) many of the old hymns.
Strange as it may sound, when I first heard the old hymns
being sung by her, I was "turned off" by them, and did not really like nor was I able to
identify with them. Well, things have changed considerably over time. Now I cannot
listen to anything but the old hymns. The old hymns are where the real theology is,
and they have a calming effect that I cannot really describe and that no other music
provides. My youngest son (age 24) listens exclusively to Christian rock, and while I
know he is saved without a doubt, he is also an angry young man, and I know he does not
know why. I know why. It is the music he listens to. So far, he thinks I am nuts and he
will not listen to me with regard to what I have said about the music he listens to.
Satan's ways are very subtle, aren't they?
They certainly are, Dennis. Thank you for
sharing your insight with us.

many years now I have known that music is a language. I have known
that it is possible to get high (get drunk) on music. It is a very euphoric
high. Since, it is so pleasant it
is also highly addictive. Once you have tried it you willingly go back for
more.
I
have also experienced the mood controlling influence of music. The mood
change is almost instantaneous and very powerful.
The
controlling effect of music is known to the Puppet Masters. All you have to
do is to go to a department store at different times of the day and note how
the music changes. Population control by music is a known science.
Janet Reno plays her music loud and obnoxious before she attacks with her
helmeted swat teams.

Stores play classical music in front of their stores to discourage crowds
bent on violence. The classical music will actually disperse the rowdy
groups.
Our
brains filter and sensor all words that enter our computer. Our moral and
ethical sentinels will actually change or alter a word before it is posted
to our memory banks. Music has no such restraint. Music is processed
raw and intact directly to the hypo-thalamus. The higher cerebral functions
are helpless (or should I say disconnected) from controlling the effect of
music on our feelings and subsequent behavior.
There
is one more significant factor. There is a difference between hearing
and feeling music. About thirty years ago I took an inflated balloon
to a rock concert. The balloon focused and magnified the intensity of the
sound waves, and my hand that was holding the balloon was visibly shaking.
I put the balloon up against my chest and I could experience a pain in my
chest cavity from the sound vibrations. At that time I knew the
difference between hearing and feeling the music. There is no doubt in my
mind that the heavy, sharp beat of Rock music can cause neurological damage
to my body.
What
I did not understand in those early years was that music is another Dyslogia.
Music does not cause a dyslogia, music is a dyslogia. Music shapes,
modifies, alters and creates images in your mind. Since, these images
are from the second dimension, virtual reality, we know that they are false,
or that they are dyslogias.
Music
is a mind altering drug. Hard
rock is highly toxic. Are we as a
nation in danger?
Under
the label Christian music we have been fed the lie that as long as the
lyrics are clean, Christian Rock is OK.
Like
I told you before, the lyrics are irrelevant. Music will override and cancel
out any effect the words may have, because music is processed raw by the
hypo-thalamus.
The
book that brought it all together, is by Dr.
Jack Wheaton "Crisis in Christian Music." Reading
this book is a must for anyone who wants a musical education.
Since,
the musical aggression is so all pervasive, such an ever present part of our
daily lives, it is imperative we formulate some kind of battle plan.
As
it is, we are being inundated, we are being swamped by a musical torrent
threatening our very existence.
How
do we protect ourselves from insanity?
Let
us at least talk [rationally] about it.

challenging me to be more pure in my thought life, viewing life, time spent with
him and how much of the world I let creep into my faith. Not long ago, we
were having a discussion in our church group about the message some
"Christian" music groups were
sending with tattoos and body piercing. I felt that the representation was
disrespectful of the temple that was our body and that it was too close to many

really surprised me. It wasn't the words themselves but hearing them from a
respected church member. He said "So if their tattoos were crosses or
of Christ would you still feel it was wrong? I was not able to answer to
my personal satisfaction, but was always troubled by his comment.
After reading some of the things
that are on your website, I now see all the destination and influence the world
and TV has had on this "Christian" family. They are both still
heavy in the opinions and approvals of the secular community in which they both
work. It struck me as so "New Age" that it was scary. Thank you
for helping me to remember my responsibility to my family, peers and most of all

Christian leaders believe music is amoral. But here is an article from a
secular source that I think clearly implies that music, and not the words, can
influence the emotions, and then cause you to act accordingly. If music can
make you angry, sad, fearful, happy, lustful, etc. how can it be amoral?

I read a chapter from a book under the page www.corssroad.to/Books/YourChildNewAge/CNA-15.html,
and from my experiences with New Age music, New Age religion, etc., I have to
say that although there is the "freedom of religion" in the United
States Constitution, I believe that people like yourselves are pushing it too
far. People like myself cannot take this b___ for too long.
You are just putting trash in other people's minds.
Now don't say that we New
Agers are putting trash into other people's minds, because we have those
complaints within our circles! Now if you are to e-mail me with your
Christian hogwash (I'm not anti-Christian, I'm anti-fundamentalist),
then I will have to send you e-mail on the realities of the New Age.
Excuse me if this sound like hate e-mail, but I'm simply scolding you for
being so immature on your spiritual search.
Imagine relying on a person
who died and resurrected so we can be fulfilled and saved from darkness.
B_____!! We have to work to receive salvation. If you want to be
your silly fundamentalist selves, fine, but I (or any New Ager for that
matter) do not want to see this website or any of its material ever again.
You're pushing the First Amendment of the United States Constitution too far,
since there are other religions that want their voices.
And if you are saying that
New Agers are pushing for a one-world government, then you are out of your
mind. We never say that! And let me tell you this, you
won't get far with your nonsense. The egotistical claim of one view of
God as being absolute is what's causing these conficts, so knock off your
nonsense! Let the other religions, Christian or non-Christian, have
their freedom since a lot of New Agers will say that you
(fundamentalist Christians) are out to put the world in slavery. So for
the last time, knock off the propaganda or you will be paying for it
sooner or later (and I don't mean with your lives).
