The Global Compact Network

"The Global Compact is a network-based initiative. At its core are the Global Compact Office, and six UN agencies. .

"..the Global Compact involves all relevant social actors: companies, whose actions it seeks to influence; governments, labour, civil society organizations, and the United Nations, the world's only truly global political forum, as an authoritative convener and facilitator. First Russian meeting to support Annan's Global Compact initiative held in Moscow: 20 November 2001

A top United Nations official has encouraged Russian companies to set up their own network to promote the Global Compact, an initiative proposed three years ago by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to involve businesses in upgrading environmental, labour and human rights conditions. ...."The idea is to weave these principles into the fabric of existing trade rules, global markets and corporate practices," Ms. Fréchette stressed. The report by the Forum's Global Governance Initiative (GGI) assesses the efforts of the world's governments and corporations over the past year, demonstrating that the world remains far off track to achieve its most important goals.
