The Global Compact Network
"The Global Compact is a
network-based initiative. At its core are the Global
Compact Office, and six UN agencies. .
"..the Global
Compact involves all relevant social actors: companies, whose
actions it seeks to influence; governments, labour, civil
society organizations, and the United Nations, the
world's only truly global political forum, as an
authoritative convener and facilitator. Since its official
launch on 26 July 2000, the initiative has now grown to over
3,800 participants..."
First Russian meeting to support Annan's Global Compact initiative held in Moscow:
20 November 2001
A top United Nations official has encouraged Russian companies to set up their own network to promote the Global Compact, an initiative proposed three years ago by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to involve businesses in upgrading environmental, labour and human rights conditions.
...."The idea is to weave these principles into the fabric of existing trade rules, global markets and corporate practices," Ms. Fréchette stressed. "The Global Compact is not a regulatory instrument or a legally binding code of conduct. Rather, the Compact is a voluntary initiative to promote good corporate citizenship."
In addition to establishing partnerships with labour and civil society organizations she encouraged companies to work with the UN and other development actors. An example of an area where the business community has worked in partnership with governments and the UN was the issue of HIV/AIDS.

Releases 2005 Report

A new report issued today by
the World Economic Forum makes clear that the world's
leaders are breaking their solemn promises to tackle global
problems from poverty to peace to environmental protection.
The report by the Forum's Global Governance Initiative (GGI)
assesses the efforts of the world's governments and
corporations over the past year, demonstrating that the
world remains far off track to achieve its most important
goals. But it also shows that 2005 could be the year of
change, especially if the formidable energies of private
enterprise are harnessed more effectively.
