Hillary's Honduran Exit Strategy: "If there is one person in Honduras who is more despised these days than deposed president Manuel Zelaya it is ... U.S. Ambassador Hugo Llorens.....Many Hondurans... see Mr. Llorens as the principal architect of a U.S. policy that has caused enormous Honduran hardship....

     "The moment the Honduran Supreme Court ordered the arrest of [corrupt former president] Mr. Zelaya in June for organizing mob violence and attempting to overthrow the constitution Mr. Llorens anointed himself colonial viceroy in charge of imposing U.S. will.... The U.S. ambassador used every weapon he could lay his hands on to try to force the country to restore Mr. Zelaya to power. This violated Honduran sovereignty.        The UN's (and Obama's) vision of "the Americas" calls for regional socialism, not democratic sovereignty.

Reported return of Honduran leader sparks protests: "The Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa erupted into demonstrations amid reports ousted president Manuel Zelaya has returned."

U.S. moves toward formal cut off of aid to Honduras: "Department staff have recommended that the ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya be declared a 'military coup' ...a step that could cut off as much as $150 million in U.S. funding to the impoverished Central American nation.

    "...this was a response to the de facto government's refusal to accept a compromise that would allow Zelaya to return to power ahead of November elections."

     What a travesty -- both for the freedom-loving Hondurans and for America! Will Obama now turn Central America (and more) over to Communist control – and use the escalating drug crisis as one of the incentives?  That is almost sure to happen if drug-supporting Zelaya is returned to power! The FARC's Honduran Friends: "President Barack Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderón are in Guadalajara, Mexico, today for the North American Leaders' Summit. They will discuss, among other topics, what to do about the explosion in drug-trafficking violence on the continent. But they are also expected to address the political situation in Honduras.... [They seem to ignore] evidence of the connection between the Honduran supporters of deposed Honduran president Manuel Zelaya and the most important South American supplier of illegal drugs to North America—the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)....

       "Mr. Zelaya broke Honduran law by trying to change the constitution so he could run for re-election. He also incited a mob that broke into an Air Force warehouse where ballots for his illegal referendum were stored. On June 28, he was arrested by order of the Supreme Court.... Even his own Liberal Party favored kicking him out of office and out of the country, and a majority of the population backs those decisions.

        "Messrs. Obama and Calderón, however, do not. They both want Mr. Zelaya reinstated.... Mr. Calderón has been waging a 'war' on drug cartels in Mexico that has cost the lives of 1,077 law-enforcement agents since December 2006. Now both he and Mr. Obama are going to have to explain their support for a political faction in Honduras that is allied with organized crime....

Instead of punishing the people of Honduras for following their constitution, the United States should restart all of its aid. The Chavez-Obama U.N. Plot Against Honduras: "The "Responsibility to Protect"... is mostly the work of the World Federalist Movement, a group dedicated to world government by strengthening the United Nations system.... But the new doctrine is so vague and subject to political manipulation that one can speculate it could be used to justify some form of U.N. intervention in Honduras.... In fact, some Hondurans are telling this columnist that they are fearful that U.N. 'blue helmets'are right now being prepared to invade their country....

     "In an ominous development, blogger Jason Poblete, an astute observer of Latin American affairs with excellent sources, reports that 'The Obama Administration is considering a United Nations Security Council Resolution against the constitutional government of Honduras.' ... the new president, appointed by Congress, is from Zelaya's own political party. Zelaya was dismissed because of the simple fact that he tried to violate the law and the Constitution. ... Leading “Progressive” Describes Obama-Chavez Axis: "Tom Hayden, once known as Mr. Jane Fonda... has written a piece for the Talking Points Memo website about 'new diplomatic collaboration' between Obama...and Chavez, who represents the interests of Iran and the Castro brothers.... Hayden, who played a role during the anti-Vietnam War protests as a virtual agent of the communist regime in Hanoi, North Vietnam, writes as if he may have some inside information about what is going on. His comrade, Bill Ayers, another member of SDS who became a member of the communist terrorist Weather Underground, is known to have deep contacts with the Chavez regime."

Honduran regime rejects plan for president's return: "This week, the European Union this week increased its pressure on the new regime, suspending 65.5 million euros (93 million dollars) in aid to Honduran institutions as part of the international aid freeze."

This is a letter from a person who used to live in Silicon Valley but moved to Honduras.  The version she tells of events in Honduras are completely different from what we're hearing on the news. We can't verify this letter, but it matches other reports from concerned citizens in Honduras -- and is confirmed by the articles linked at the end of this page.

I thought I would let you know what is really happening here since the news coverage is pretty horrible and definitely incomplete.

On Sunday we did not have a military coup. Though that makes much better headlines, it was actually an Impeachment. The Honduran Constitution does not have an impeachment process so they did the best they could with what they had.

First the entire (100%) of the congress voted for Mel's removal from office. [Here it is proper to call politicians by their first name so I will henceforth refer to him as "Mel"]  Then it went through the supreme Court which endorsed it. Then the military escorted Mel out of the country.

The acting president is the highest ranking member of Mel's own party. He is to act until the regularly scheduled election in November, and the swearing in in January. That was on Sunday.

Here is some background. Mel Zalaya was elected 4 years ago. After the first year in office Mel started angling to get himself elected dictator for life. He was continually blocked by the congress and the supreme court. Finally, after several abortive attempts earlier this year, Mel set up a referendum to be voted on last Sunday. All the ballot boxes were pre-filled with "Yes" votes. That secret didn't hold worth a darn - it was widely known. 

A few weeks ago, Mel ordered the Military to distribute the boxes and run the vote.  The top generals applied for direction to the Supreme Court who verified again that even if it passed fairly, the referendum was illegal because it suspended the constitution. Mel fired all the Generals. Supreme court said "you can't do that" So Mel told his minister of Education to have all the teachers and principals in the country deliver the boxes and run the election. They said, "Sure Boss" and didn't show up.

The Vote Mel wanted basically allowed him to nullify the constitution, suspend congress, fire the generals and Supreme Court Justices and remain president until he felt he had done all that needs doing to fix Honduras (read that - "for life") Mel's good buddy is Hugo Chavez of Venezuela pull off the same trick at the end of the last century - you might notice he is still the communist dictator of Venezuela .

The "Military Coup" was nothing of the sort. Even when there were demonstrators in the streets of the capitol, they were hitting the soldiers but the soldiers weren't hitting back.  (On Roatan - no soldiers, no demonstrators)  There are rumors I can't confirm, though they are widely believed here, that Mel took 2 million dollars from Chavez to spread around the countryside to the poorest of the poor to get them to fill the streets of Tegus (the capitol of Honduras ) with demonstrators.

In any case, you now know more than all your friends - and possibly much more than you care to know about Honduran politics. Short version - this is still a democratic country..

Exiled president heading home to set up alternative government seat inside Honduras: "Zelaya's foriegn minister, Patricia Rodas, said he is 'on his way' back, but refused to say how or when he planned to enter Honduras. Zelaya's current whereabouts are unclear and the leaders who replaced him after the military sent him into exile have vowed to arrest him if he returns.... Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez - an ally of Zelaya - said he had spoken with Zelaya and the exiled leader told him: 'I don't know if I will die, but I'm going to Honduras.'"

Obama stands with tyrants: "When thousands of Iranians flooded the streets of Tehran protesting a rigged election and were beaten and shot down by pro-regime thugs, the president bided his time before making a series of noncommittal statements.... However, when a socialist demagogue was ejected unceremoniously from Honduras on Sunday by his own government for trying to establish a presidency for life, Mr. Obama instantly sprang to his defense.

      "What happened in Honduras was not a military coup. Honduras has a civilian president, Roberto Micheletti, a member of former President Manuel Zelaya's own Liberal Party, who was elevated to the post after Mr. Zelaya was removed. The army did not seize power, but acted as the elected government's instrument in ousting Mr. Zelaya, who was well on his way to subverting the Honduran constitution and erecting a dictatorship. ...

     "[Earlier, the] military impounded the illegal ballots, and Mr. Zelaya fired military chief Gen. Romeo Vasquez for refusing to distribute them. ... The Supreme Court quickly ruled the firing was illegal. Meanwhile, Mr. Zelaya led a band of followers to air force headquarters and seized the illegal ballots, seeking to hold the referendum regardless....

     "Mr. Zelaya is a demagogue in the mold of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, who bolstered the Zelaya regime... and gave direct financial support through the ALBA Bank. The acronym stands for Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, a Chavez-backed anti-U.S. alliance of nine Latin American states, prominently Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua, all of which are pursuing explicitly anti-U.S. policies."

Honduras Is Right About Zelaya: "Hondurans resisting former President Manuel Zelaya’s efforts to stay in power are not mounting a coup d’etat. On the contrary, they are fighting against the all-too-common practice of past Latin American leaders who choose, against the rule of law and democracy, to stay in power.... Usually, it begins with a legitimate election.... But then -- either when that term runs out or even before -- the president decides that he does not need to be re-elected and decides to ignore or overturn the law (and often the nation’s constitution) and remain in office.

      "The authoritarian culture manifests itself when the president uses all the tools and power of the executive branch to overcome the weak checks and balances that exist in that country.... During the '60s and '70s, the radical, authoritarian, anti-democratic left tried to come to power using violent means, such as urban terrorism and guerrilla warfare. But they were defeated in Uruguay, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.... They found a new way in Venezuela. ...

      "Chavez used his enormous early popularity to gradually begin dismantling the country’s institutional framework until the legislature and the judiciary branches became mere rubber stamps for his authoritarian decisions.... President Zelaya tried, but so far has failed, to replicate Chavez’s success....The Hondurans... know how it ends and told Zelaya that they would not let him play the movie in their own theater.... To say this is a traditional military coup d’etat is not only to misjudge the actual events...it also ignores the actual provisions of the country’s constitution."

Honduras Outraged by Obama-Chavez Alliance by Cliff Kincaid, Accuracy in Media: "I continue to receive messages from Honduran citizens upset at the international media for their distorted coverage of the situation in the Central American country. The people support the ouster of Manuel 'Mel' Zelaya, who is considered a puppet of Venezuelan Communist ruler Hugo Chavez. They are mystified that an American president would want to return this Chavez puppet to power....

      "One Honduran wrote: 'The recent action taken by our Congress is highly supported by several organizations in support of peace and democracy: the State General Attorney, the Supreme Court, the Armed Forces, the private organizations and especially many young people. Mr. Zelaya broke the law on several occasions even after the Supreme Court stated that it was illegal. He had no respect for our laws and our Constitution.

      "It's not a new fact to the international media what are Chavez intentions over Central and South America. And we in Honduras don't want that. We don't want to go back to socialism or communism. We still believe very strongly in our democracy and very strongly in our freedom....

      "May God bless our small but courageous country. And I hope the international media investigate very deeply.... Thank you again for reading our side of the story.... Many people don't know where Honduras is, but after this, they shall remember that Honduras said no to socialism and communism....

      "I am shocked by Mr. Obama's comments. Doesn't he know Mr. Zelaya is allied with Chavez? Doesn't he know that Mr. Zelaya wants to do in Honduras what Chavez did in Venezuela, Morales has done in Bolivia, Correa has done in Ecuador, Ortega in Nicaragua, as well as what Castro has done in Cuba?"

      "Another wrote: '...are living in a horrible situation in our country and feel very disappointed and frustrated because we don't have the support of the international community. 'How is it possible that other governments support a liar, a corrupt man, a 'Chavez wannabe,' as he is called in some articles, who also has strong links to the drug dealing business?"

The U.N. Rides to the Rescue.... of yet another leftist: "In yet another demonstration of the United Nations' double-standard, the General Assembly on June 30th unanimously demanded the immediate re-instatement of the deposed Honduran president Manuel Zelaya....

      "Zelaya is a committed leftist, whom the UN General Assembly president Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann – the Sandinista friend of Ahmadinejad – has made his personal cause. D'Escoto Brockmann invited Zelaya to address the General Assembly. Their mutual buddy, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, threatened military action to restore Zelaya to power – an offer that Zelaya did not outright refuse. And President Obama did not help matters when he quickly hopped on board the save-the-leftist bandwagon while being very slow to react to the outrageous crack-down in Iran." See Regionalism

Honduras at the Tipping Point: "Mr. Zelaya's violations of the rule of law in recent months were numerous. But the tipping point came 10 days ago, when he led a violent mob that stormed a military base to seize and distribute Venezuelan-printed ballots for an illegal referendum. All but a handful of my letters pleaded for international understanding of the threat to the constitutional democracy that Mr. Zelaya presented. One phrase occurred again and again: 'Please pray for us.'...

     "Hondurans have good cause for calling on divine intervention: Reason has gone AWOL.... Ruling the debate on Mr. Zelaya's behavior is Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chávez, who is now the reigning international authority on 'democracy.' Mr. Chávez is demanding that Mr. Zelaya be reinstated.... He's leading the charge from the Organization of American States (OAS). The United Nations and the Obama administration are falling in line. Is this insane?...

      "This is a moment when the U.S. ought to be on the side of the rule of law, which the Honduran court and Congress upheld."

Keeping an eye on Honduras from overseas: "Obama begins two days of summitry with Russian President Demitri Medvedev on Monday. Obama's top adviser on Latin America, Den Restrepo, spent all of Saturday and most of Sunday at the Washington headquarters of the Organization of American States. The OAS kicked Honduras out in protest of the military removal of Zelaya from power. Micheletti says Zelaya was ousted under provisions of the national constitution that prohibited presidents from seeking a second four-year term. Zelaya sought a referendum on a second term and refused to abandon those efforts when met with resistance in the Honduran Legislature and Supreme Court. Micheletti has protested the OAS move on the grounds the organization refused to consult with the new government on the justifications for Zelaya's removal from power."

Honduras Defends Its Democracy -- Fidel Castro and Hillary Clinton object: "Hugo Chávez's coalition-building efforts suffered a setback yesterday when the Honduran military sent its president packing for abusing the nation's constitution. It seems that President Mel Zelaya miscalculated when he tried to emulate the success of his good friend Hugo in reshaping the Honduran Constitution to his liking." See Animal Farm
